Mathematicians Of The Future Part 1

IMG_0804

Launching Mathematicians of The Future:

Mathematicians of The Future evolved through finding ways to make math as real-life as possible. Students are grouped into specific mathematical professions, such as the engineers, the accountants, the coders, the architects, and the statisticians. At the start of our Mathematicians of The Future launch, each group researches facts about their profession and how math connects with their profession. Students then make a mascot to go with their profession.

From this point forward, students will be known as a specific profession. For example, when I meet with my engineers, I say, “Engineers bring your math journals to the back table.”

Professional Expectations:

Now that students are known as specific professionals, we discuss the expectations that professionals have. I make many correlations between my profession as a teacher and the students’ profession as a mathematician.

For example, we discuss how teachers need to be able to collaborate with one another and how in the professional world, you can’t be rude to your co-workers. We also discuss how important it is to stay focused and complete your work during your work day. I make examples of how our principal expects that specific work gets done in a timely manner. As a class, we discussed what we thought was important for professionals to do. We refer to this list of expectations for mathematical professionals.
