PBL Guided Math Workshop: Part 2

Mathematicians Of The Future Part 2:

Following A Work Routine:

Mathematical Professionals have a set routine everyday.

  1. Students start every mathematical period by sitting at their “dot” with their math bins. In order for students to sit with their mathematical group, each group has a colored desk that they sit at. I’ve organized these using these inexpensive colored dots.
  2. Students have all of their materials organized in a math bin. In their math bin, they keep their math journals, interactive notebook, template, calculator, slate, and a marker. This makes it easier to organize all of their math materials. When I call students to work with me, I can say, “Accountants, bring your math bin to the back table.” Then students will have all of their materials, so I can quickly transition between practicing facts with a slate and a marker, and then working on a math journal page as a group.

    3. Mathematician’s have a To Do List of work that they need to complete every day. I’ve created a template using Google Slides. This is convenient, because I can share the document with my co-teacher and then we both have access to change and coordinate the lesson plans.

    Mathematicians know that they will look at their professional To-Do List to see all of the work that they have to do during their math session. Professionals know that they need to complete the work in the order that it’s given. This is a great way to differentiate work, because different professions can receive different work for the day.

4. Once students complete all of the work for their day, they transition into Overtime Work. Overtime Work is a great place for students to practice their facts, play math games, watch videos about the mathematical unit, or use the iPads for fact practice.

Overtime work is a great place to practice fact fluency. One way students can practice their facts is by completing Google Form Fact Fluency. Students scan the QR code using a free QR scanner. Then they will practice their multiplication facts. This is a great independent Over Time activity, because students can self-assess their work. Every answer has immediate feedback and teaches students the correct way to answer their multiplication fact.

Mathematicians of The Future has been a positive and exciting way for students to complete their math work independently. Students feel confident in following their work routine and students feel accomplished to finish their work and transition into Overtime Work.
